Description

These Baked Italian Subs combine hoagie rolls filled with pepperoni, turkey, provolone cheese, red onion, and sweet and hot salad peppers, all seasoned with Italian dressing and herbs. Brushed with garlic butter and baked until melty and warm, these subs make an easy and flavorful meal perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Dressing

  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 1/3 cup Italian dressing

Meats & Cheese

  • 12 slices sandwich-sized pepperoni
  • 12 ounces turkey (about 4-5 slices per sub, folded twice)
  • 12 slices provolone cheese (3 slices per sub, folded once)

Vegetables & Seasonings

  • ½ red onion, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sweet and hot salad peppers
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano

Butter & Flavor

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare Baking Dish. Get out a 9×13 inch baking dish and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F to ensure it’s ready for baking the subs.
  2. Slice the Hoagie Rolls and Add Dressing. Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, stopping before cutting all the way through to create a hinge. Brush the inside of the bottom and top buns thoroughly with the Italian dressing for moisture and flavor.
  3. Layer Meats and Cheese. Place three slices of pepperoni on the bottom bun. Fold the turkey slices twice and place about 4 to 5 slices on top of the pepperoni. Fold the provolone cheese slices once and layer three slices over the turkey.
  4. Add Vegetables and Seasonings. Place sliced red onion and sweet and hot salad peppers over the cheese. Sprinkle evenly with pepper, salt, and oregano for a balanced seasoning profile. Partially close the buns, leaving them ready for the next step.
  5. Prepare Garlic Butter and Brush Top Buns. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine butter and garlic salt. Microwave until the butter melts completely. Use a brush to coat the top buns with the garlic butter mixture to add flavor and help browning.
  6. Bake the Subs. Place the prepared subs in the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt and the subs to warm through.

Notes

  • Feel free to substitute the pepperoni and turkey with other deli meats like salami, ham, or roast beef; just slice thinly for easy eating.
  • Customize your veggies with additional toppings such as thinly sliced green peppers or black olives for extra flavor.
  • Try different cheeses like mozzarella, cheddar, or Swiss for variety. Grated Parmesan sprinkled on top before baking adds a gourmet touch.
  • These subs make great meal prep options. Assemble and wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, refrigerate up to 24 hours, then bake when ready. Add extra baking time if baking from cold.
