For the cream cheese glaze:
- 4 tablespoons cream cheese, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the cinnamon sugar:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
For the toast:
- 6 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon grated orange zest (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon good honey
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 large loaf challah, sliced into 1/2-inch thick slices
- Unsalted butter
- Vegetable oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 250°F. This will keep cooked French toast warm and crispy while you prepare the rest.
- Make the glaze: In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Transfer the glaze to a zip top bag, seal, and set aside.
- Make the cinnamon sugar: In a wide shallow bowl, combine the granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well to evenly distribute.
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, orange zest (if using), vanilla extract, honey, and salt. Dip each bread slice into the mixture, soaking for about 5 minutes, turning once to ensure even absorption.
- Cook the French toast: Heat 1 tablespoon each of butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the soaked bread slices in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove from the pan and immediately dip in the cinnamon sugar, turning to coat fully.
- Keep warm: Transfer the coated French toast to a sheet pan and keep warm in the oven at 250°F while cooking the remaining slices, adding more butter and oil as needed.
- Finish and serve: Once all slices are cooked and coated, arrange them on serving plates. Snip a small corner off the bag with the cream cheese glaze and drizzle over the French toast. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use a sturdy bread like challah to hold up well to soaking and coating.
- Adjust the cinnamon sugar mixture to taste for a more or less cinnamon-intense flavor.
- For extra decadence, add a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream before serving.
- This recipe can be prepared ahead; keep the French toast warm in the oven and add the glaze just before serving.
