Description

Churro French Toast combines the indulgence of crispy, cinnamon-sugar-coated bread with a rich cream cheese glaze, creating a decadent breakfast treat that’s perfect for weekend brunch or special occasions.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the cream cheese glaze:

  • 4 tablespoons cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the cinnamon sugar:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For the toast:

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon good honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 large loaf challah, sliced into 1/2-inch thick slices
  • Unsalted butter
  • Vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 250°F. This will keep cooked French toast warm and crispy while you prepare the rest.
  2. Make the glaze: In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Transfer the glaze to a zip top bag, seal, and set aside.
  3. Make the cinnamon sugar: In a wide shallow bowl, combine the granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well to evenly distribute.
  4. Prepare the egg mixture: In a large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, orange zest (if using), vanilla extract, honey, and salt. Dip each bread slice into the mixture, soaking for about 5 minutes, turning once to ensure even absorption.
  5. Cook the French toast: Heat 1 tablespoon each of butter and vegetable oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the soaked bread slices in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove from the pan and immediately dip in the cinnamon sugar, turning to coat fully.
  6. Keep warm: Transfer the coated French toast to a sheet pan and keep warm in the oven at 250°F while cooking the remaining slices, adding more butter and oil as needed.
  7. Finish and serve: Once all slices are cooked and coated, arrange them on serving plates. Snip a small corner off the bag with the cream cheese glaze and drizzle over the French toast. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use a sturdy bread like challah to hold up well to soaking and coating.
  • Adjust the cinnamon sugar mixture to taste for a more or less cinnamon-intense flavor.
  • For extra decadence, add a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream before serving.
  • This recipe can be prepared ahead; keep the French toast warm in the oven and add the glaze just before serving.
