Delight in these classic chocolate covered pretzels, combining the perfect balance of salty and sweet. Using smooth melted semi-sweet or white chocolate, these pretzels are dipped and optionally adorned with colorful sprinkles, making them an ideal treat for any occasion or festive gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
Chocolate Coating
- 8 ounces (226g) semi-sweet or white chocolate (two 4-ounce bars), finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil or coconut oil
Pretzels
- 4 cups pretzels
Optional Toppings
- Sprinkles for topping
Instructions
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to create a non-stick surface for setting the coated pretzels.
- Melt Chocolate and Oil: Melt the chocolate with the vegetable or coconut oil using a double boiler or microwave. In the microwave, heat in 20-second increments, stirring in between, until the chocolate is smooth and fully melted.
- Dip Pretzels: Using a fork, dip each pretzel into the melted chocolate, then tap off the excess chocolate on the side of the bowl. Use a toothpick to slide the coated pretzel onto the lined baking sheet. Immediately add sprinkles if desired.
- Optional Drizzle: If there is leftover melted chocolate, reheat if needed and drizzle over the coated pretzels with a squeeze bottle for added decoration.
- Chill to Set: Refrigerate the baking sheet for 20–30 minutes until the chocolate is firm and set.
- Storage: Store the finished chocolate-covered pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or refrigerate for up to two weeks.
Notes
- Freezing Instructions: After setting, layer pretzels between parchment sheets in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Chocolate may appear dull but remains safe to eat.
- Chocolate Tips: Use 4-ounce baking chocolate bars such as Baker’s or Ghirardelli for best flavor and texture. Avoid chocolate chips as they contain stabilizers that prevent proper melting.
- Oil Choice: Vegetable oil thins the chocolate best for coating. Coconut oil can be used but results in a thicker coating. Do not use butter.
- Variations: Experiment with various pretzel shapes and chocolate types (white, milk, dark). Add nuts, crushed candy, or colored sprinkles for thematic treats.
- Special Tools: Baking sheet, parchment paper, double boiler or microwave-safe glass cup, fork, toothpick, squeeze bottle (optional).
