Description

Cloud bread is a fluffy, light, and airy bread alternative that is easy to prepare and perfect for those looking for a unique, low-carb treat. With only a handful of ingredients and straightforward instructions, this delicate and delicious bread is a fun and creative recipe to try.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Main Ingredients

    • 4 Egg Whites, from large eggs
    • 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar
    • 1 1/2 tablespoons Cornstarch
    • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (optional)
    • A few drops of Food Coloring (optional)

Optional Variations

  • 1/2 teaspoon Almond Extract (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Lemon Extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 300℉ and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and aid in easy cleanup.
  2. Whisk the egg whites: In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites until they become frothy and bubbly. This helps create the volume essential for cloud bread’s fluffy texture.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients: Gradually add granulated sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract (or substitute extracts), and optional food coloring to the egg whites. Continue whisking until stiff peaks form, indicating the mixture is ready.
  4. Shape the bread: Form the mixture into 2 domes on the prepared baking sheet. Use a spatula to round out the domes neatly, and let them sit for 5-10 minutes to settle.
  5. Bake to perfection: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. The cloud bread is done when the outside achieves a slightly golden or golden-hued color, depending on whether food coloring was used.

Notes

  • Feel free to substitute almond or lemon extract in place of the vanilla extract. Use ½ teaspoon almond extract or ¼ teaspoon lemon extract to avoid overpowering flavors.
  • Enjoy cloud bread immediately after baking, as it cannot be stored for long and may deflate within an hour.
  • For best serving practices, cut around the parchment paper and serve on plates. Alternatively, lift the bread gently from the bottom, as it’s less sticky than the top.
  • Avoid touching the outer crust too much as it may peel off, revealing the inner texture.
  • Using a fork or spoon is recommended when eating cloud bread, as it is sticky, resembling a cotton candy texture.
