Ingredients
Scale
Chicken and Base
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 10.5 oz condensed cream of chicken soup
- 1 oz onion soup mix
- 2 cups beef broth
Toppings
- 6 – 8 slices provolone cheese
- 1/2 tsp thyme leaves
- 1 cup French’s crispy fried onions
Instructions
- Prepare the Crock Pot: Spray the inside of the Crock pot well with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Add Onions: Spread the sliced yellow onion evenly on the bottom of the Crock pot, creating a flavorful base.
- Place Chicken: Arrange the boneless, skinless chicken breasts on top of the onions evenly.
- Mix the Sauce: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of chicken soup, onion soup mix, and beef broth until smooth and combined.
- Pour Sauce Over Chicken: Pour the prepared soup mixture evenly over the chicken breasts in the Crock pot.
- Cook Slowly: Cover with the lid and set the Crock pot to LOW. Allow the chicken to cook undisturbed for 5 hours to develop deep, savory flavors and tenderize the meat.
- Add Cheese: After 5 hours, carefully place the provolone cheese slices on top of each piece of chicken.
- Melt Cheese: Replace the lid and continue cooking for about 10 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
- Finish with Toppings: Remove the lid and sprinkle the thyme leaves and French’s crispy fried onions evenly on top of the chicken and cheese.
- Crisp Onions: Leave the Crock pot uncovered on LOW for about 10 minutes to warm the crispy fried onions and let the thyme release its aroma.
- Serve: Serve the French Onion Chicken hot, ideally over cooked noodles or rice to soak up the savory sauce. Enjoy this comforting, flavorful meal!
Notes
- Spraying the Crock pot prevents the onions and cheese from sticking.
- Using LOW setting allows the chicken to become very tender without drying out.
- Adding fried onions at the end keeps them crispy for texture contrast.
- Serve with noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently to preserve moisture.
