Description
Classic Meatball Subs featuring homemade or frozen meatballs simmered in rich marinara sauce, nestled in toasted hoagie rolls spread with garlic butter, and topped with melted Italian cheese blend for a satisfying and comforting sandwich.
Ingredients
Scale
Meatballs
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 egg
- ½ cup seasoned bread crumbs
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Sauce and Bread
- 2 cups pasta sauce or marinara sauce
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 4 tablespoons garlic butter
- 1 cup shredded Italian cheese blend or mozzarella or provolone
Instructions
- Prepare the Meatballs: For homemade meatballs, combine ground beef, egg, seasoned bread crumbs, Italian seasoning, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Mix well until fully combined. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on a parchment-lined baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 20 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked through.
- Simmer Meatballs in Sauce: Transfer the cooked meatballs to a saucepan and add the 2 cups of pasta or marinara sauce. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes to infuse the meatballs with the sauce’s flavors.
- Prepare the Hoagie Rolls: While the meatballs simmer, spread garlic butter inside each hoagie roll. Preheat the broiler, then place the rolls under the broiler for approximately 3 minutes or until the inside is golden and toasted.
- Assemble the Subs: Arrange the toasted rolls in a 9×13 baking dish. Place 4 meatballs in each roll, spoon some sauce over the meatballs, and sprinkle a generous amount of shredded Italian cheese blend on top.
- Broil to Melt Cheese: Return the assembled subs to the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve immediately with additional sauce on the side for dipping if desired.
Notes
- Frozen meatballs can be used as a convenient alternative; just ensure they are fully heated through before serving.
- Customize the cheese by using mozzarella, provolone, or a blend depending on your preference.
- Garlic butter can be made by mixing softened butter with minced garlic and a pinch of salt for richer flavor.
- To save time, bake meatballs in advance and reheat in sauce before assembling subs.
- Serve with chips or a simple side salad for a complete meal.
