- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, thinly sliced
For the Sauce:
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed
- 1 & 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Prepare the slow cooker: Spray the body of a 6 or 8-quart slow cooker with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Add the chicken: Place the chicken breasts at the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Season the chicken: Sprinkle the brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt evenly over the chicken.
- Add the butter: Place the slices of unsalted butter on top of the seasoned chicken.
- Cook the chicken: Cook the chicken for 5-6 hours on low or 3-4 hours on high until tender.
- Shred the chicken: Using two forks, shred the chicken in the slow cooker and mix it with the juices. Keep warm while preparing the sauce.
- Make the sauce: In a small saucepot, combine the butter, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly to avoid burning, until the mixture simmers. Remove from heat.
- Assemble the sandwich: Place the shredded chicken on your bread of choice, drizzle with the prepared sauce, and serve immediately.
Notes
- Nutrition is calculated for the shredded chicken and sauce only, without buns or toppings.
- Adjust the Heat: Add more cayenne pepper or hot sauce if you prefer spicier food.
- Keep the Sauce Warm: Stir occasionally to prevent separation, as the sauce tends to separate when cooled.
- Serve Immediately: These sandwiches taste best when served hot and fresh.
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Using fresh garlic and onion powder enhances the flavor.
- Toast the Buns: For added texture and flavor, lightly toast your buns before assembling the sandwich.
- Customize Your Toppings: Add your favorite toppings, like pickles or coleslaw, to make the sandwich your own.
