Description

A delicious and easy-to-make recipe featuring Texas toast topped with flavorful sloppy joe mixture and gooey melted mozzarella cheese. Perfect for a comforting meal or quick weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 15 ounces sloppy joe sauce or 1 batch homemade sauce
  • 6 pieces frozen Texas toast
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F to get it ready for baking the toast.
  2. Cook the beef and onion: In a skillet, cook the lean ground beef and finely chopped onion until no pink remains in the meat. Once done, drain any excess fat to avoid greasy toast.
  3. Simmer with sloppy joe sauce: Add sloppy joe sauce (store-bought or homemade) to the skillet and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to let the flavors blend together.
  4. Bake the Texas toast: Place the frozen Texas toast slices on a large baking sheet and bake them in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes or until they become golden and slightly crispy.
  5. Add sloppy joe mixture and cheese: Divide the prepared sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toasted bread slices. Top each slice with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  6. Finish baking: Return the toast to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • Alternately, after cheese is added to the sloppy joe mixture, broil for 1 minute until the cheese is melted for a toasty finish.
  • Try rubbing a clove of garlic over the baked bread before adding the sloppy joe mixture for a delicious extra layer of flavor.
  • Refrigerate leftover sloppy joe mixture separate from the toast. It will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge.
  • Sloppy joe sauce is perfect for freezing. In an airtight container, it will keep in the freezer for 2-3 months.
  • To reheat, warm the sloppy joe mixture on the stovetop and repeat from step 4 for a quick lunch or dinner.
