Main Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 15 ounces sloppy joe sauce or 1 batch homemade sauce
- 6 pieces frozen Texas toast
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F to get it ready for baking the toast.
- Cook the beef and onion: In a skillet, cook the lean ground beef and finely chopped onion until no pink remains in the meat. Once done, drain any excess fat to avoid greasy toast.
- Simmer with sloppy joe sauce: Add sloppy joe sauce (store-bought or homemade) to the skillet and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to let the flavors blend together.
- Bake the Texas toast: Place the frozen Texas toast slices on a large baking sheet and bake them in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes or until they become golden and slightly crispy.
- Add sloppy joe mixture and cheese: Divide the prepared sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toasted bread slices. Top each slice with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Finish baking: Return the toast to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes
- Alternately, after cheese is added to the sloppy joe mixture, broil for 1 minute until the cheese is melted for a toasty finish.
- Try rubbing a clove of garlic over the baked bread before adding the sloppy joe mixture for a delicious extra layer of flavor.
- Refrigerate leftover sloppy joe mixture separate from the toast. It will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge.
- Sloppy joe sauce is perfect for freezing. In an airtight container, it will keep in the freezer for 2-3 months.
- To reheat, warm the sloppy joe mixture on the stovetop and repeat from step 4 for a quick lunch or dinner.
