Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 large sweet onion, diced
- 2 pounds at least 85% lean ground beef or 1 pound each of ground beef and ground veal
- 4 – 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons granulated garlic
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more to taste
- 1 teaspoon pepper, plus more to taste
- 4 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 (28 ounce) can ground peeled tomatoes
- 1 (28 ounce) can tomato puree
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped basil or torn basil leaves
- 2 teaspoons sugar
Instructions
- Sauté Onions: In a large heavy-bottomed pot, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion until translucent, about 5-8 minutes.
- Add Garlic and Meat: Add garlic and cook until fragrant. Then, add the ground beef and veal, if using, and cook until browned.
- Season and Tomato Paste: Sprinkle with granulated garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir in tomato paste until it loses its bright red color.
- Add Tomatoes and Simmer: Stir in peeled tomatoes, tomato puree, sugar, and basil. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about 1 hour until thickened, stirring occasionally.
- Adjust Seasoning: Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
