Ingredients
Scale
Fries
- 26 ounces frozen French fries
Cheese Sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 2 teaspoons ranch seasoning powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder (divided)
- 8 ounces white cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven or air fryer: Set your oven or air fryer to 400°F to get it ready for cooking the fries.
- Cook the fries: Arrange the frozen French fries in a single layer on a baking sheet or inside the air fryer basket. Cook according to package instructions until golden brown and crispy.
- Make the roux: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and continue cooking for about 2 minutes to form a roux and remove the raw flour taste.
- Add milk and seasonings: Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper, 2 teaspoons ranch seasoning powder, and half of the cayenne powder (about 1/4 teaspoon).
- Thicken the sauce: Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the mixture for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens to a creamy consistency.
- Add cheese: Stir in the 8 ounces of shredded white cheddar cheese until fully melted and incorporated into the sauce.
- Combine and serve: Pour the warm cheese sauce generously over the cooked fries. Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, spread the fries out well to avoid overcrowding.
- Adjust cayenne powder depending on your preferred spice level.
- Use freshly shredded white cheddar for smoother melting and better flavor.
- This dish is best enjoyed immediately to prevent fries from getting soggy.
- Ranch seasoning powder can be swapped with your favorite ranch dressing mix if unavailable.
